Sri Krishna

Sri Krishna Janmashtami is Lord Krishna’s birthday, one of Hindu’s auspicious festivals. As of today August 14th, 2017, we are celebrating 5244th  Birthday of Lord Krishna. He was born 3228 BCE which is 5,200 years ago in the city of Mathura. He was born on the 8,63,874th year of Dwaparyug. Janmashtami is observed on the Ashtami (8th day) of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada (August-September). Krishna Paksha falls in those 14 days of the full moon to the new moon in the month of Bhadrapada according to Hindu Lunar calendar.
Lord Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva in the city of Mathura. Janmashtami holds great significance in Hindu community. People fast on the day to celebrate this auspicious occasion.
He is believed to live 125 years. God Shri Krishna was eight incarnation of God Vishnu. God Shri Krishna had 8 wives. Rukmini was his first wife. She was an incarnation of Goddess Mahalakshmi.

Sri Krishna’s wives were:

  1. Rukmini (Incarnation of Goddess Maha Lakshmi)
  2. Satyabhama (Incarnation of Goddess Earth)
  3. Jambuvanti (Daughter of Jambuvant)
  4. Kalindi (Incarnation of Yamuna)
  5. Laxmana
  6. Mitravrinda
  7. Nagnajiti
  8. Bhadra

Devotees, who fast on Janmashtami, eat only one meal on the day before Janmashtami. On Janmashtami, they do all day long fast and break it at midnight. No grains should be consumed during Janmashtami fasting. ujwalasdelicacies.com has a number of recipes for your fasting needs.
